HR Generalist

Southwestern’s Human Resources team is responsible for the law school’s applicant and employee experience, including staff talent acquisition and workforce planning, employment classification and compensation, staff and faculty benefits administration, staff performance management, staff, faculty, and student worker payroll coordination, and legal compliance. 

The HR Generalist will support the law school's mission by providing professional‑level human resources services across a broad range of functional areas, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, data management, compliance, and HR operations.

This position requires sound judgment, discretion, and a high level of confidentiality, as well as comfort working with HR data and systems in a collaborative academic environment. The HR Generalist will report to the Director of Administrative Services. This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for a limited hybrid work modality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include: 

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Support full-cycle recruitment for staff positions, including posting positions, screening applications, coordinating interviews, and preparing offer materials
  • Facilitate onboarding processes, including new hire documentation, orientation support, and compliance requirements

Employee Relations & HR Support

  • Assist with employee matters, including documentation, policy interpretation, and issue resolution under the direction of senior HR staff
  • Promote a respectful, inclusive, and compliant workplace culture consistent with Southwestern’s mission and values
  • Support Southwestern’s Ergonomic program to support employee wellbeing 

HR Data & Systems

  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records in HR information systems and related databases
  • Ensure data integrity across personnel files, payroll coordination, and benefits administration processes

Policy, Compliance & Administration

  • Support compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations
  • Assist with development, implementation, and communication of HR policies and procedures
  • Support annual HR processes such as performance reviews, employee surveys, and training initiatives 

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in special projects and cross‑functional initiatives as assigned
  • Provide general administrative support to the HR team as needed 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or equivalent) in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant HR experience
  • Experience working with HR data, databases, or HRIS systems
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or public‑interest organizations
  • Knowledge of California employment law
  • Proficiency with Excel, HR reporting tools, and document management systems

Salary: $30/hour
