Gambling Law

Gambling law is a relatively unique body of law. Historically, gambling has been both prohibited and criminalized on the one hand and legalized and regulated on the other hand. Gambling law addresses the legalized and regulated aspect of gambling; the course would only lightly touch on the prohibited and criminalized aspect of gambling. This course will provide an overview of public policy issues involving legalized gambling.

Ca Evidence & Sentencing Law

The course would offer students an overview of the Major California Discovery Statutes, with common law decisions and articles offering commentary of the Statutes, which would be provided in a Textbook.

This course is designed for students interested in availing themselves of California Evidence Law (especially those portions tested on the California Bar Exam), and learning the basic concepts of California Sentencing Law, with a special emphasis on the public policy issues that underlie the latter.

Removal Defense Clinic

The Removal Defense Clinic is designed to train students to represent low-income immigrants in immigration removal proceedings before the Executive Office of Immigration Review, including matters before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services where applicable. The clinic will focus its removal practice to cases in immigration court that involve the following forms of immigration relief: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Asylum, Withholding of Removal, Relief Under the Convention Against Torture, and Cancellation of Removal.

Ent Law Firm Externship

The Entertainment Law Firm Externship exposes students to various aspects of entertainment law through select field placements at law firms. Students who have demonstrated exceptional competency and interest in media and entertainment law are selected by the Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute for the Entertainment Law Firm Externship. The field placement is complimented by an academic component, including several class meetings on campus and/or via videoconferencing.

The Externship course provides an invaluable opportunity to enhance students’ legal education through structured and supervised off-campus placements, where students learn through observation as well as hands-on fieldwork. The fieldwork is complemented with a class component.

Crimmigration Law

This class addresses the historical and contemporary relationships between criminal and immigration law. In particular, it explores how migrants are framed as criminals, how people with criminal convictions are treated in the immigration law system, and how unique policies apply to immigrants in the criminal justice system.
