Interim Clerkship Program

The Interim Clerkship Program is a worthwhile program created by the Alumni Board of Directors in support of Southwestern's newest graduates. The program matches alumni employers with the new graduates who are awaiting the July bar exam results before securing their first attorney position. Offering the graduates a short-term clerkship during those months following the bar exam (August through December) provides them with essential financial and professional support. Participating in this program is one of the nicest ways fellow alumni can make a difference in the life of an individual member of the Southwestern community.

If you are interested in participating in the program, complete the response form below, indicating your interest in hiring one or more law clerks anytime from now until the end of the year. As a truly win-win situation for all, established alumni will get a trained and eager Southwestern graduate who will be an asset to their office, while in turn, the recent graduate will equally benefit from the experience of working with fellow alumni and augmenting their resume.

Whether established alumni decide to pay law clerks by the hour or through a weekly or monthly salary, hiring a recent graduate to assist in one's practice can be extremely cost effective. Law clerk salaries for small to medium sized firms are in the range of $15-$25 per hour, depending on the size of the office and areas of practice. By having law clerks perform research; draft preliminary versions of pleadings; draft or review contract provisions; assist in the discovery or due diligence process; communicate with clients; or assist with trial preparation, an established alumni's valuable time will be freed up to perform other duties. This can result in increased efficiency for the firm and it's clients.

Southwestern is appreciative for taking the time to consider how the Interim Clerkship Program can help fulfill a firm's fall clerkship needs. The Alumni Board is committed to assisting Southwestern’s students and graduates in supplementing their excellent legal education with practical on-the-job experience. Clearly, fellow alumni are the best resource for making that happen!
