Southwestern Hosts Labor and Employment Law Trial Advocacy Competition
On November 5 and 6, 2005, the Second Annual Labor and Employment Law Trial Advocacy Competition, a competition among law schools in California, Arizona and Nevada, will be held at Southwestern. The Labor and Employment Law Section of the American Bar Association established the Labor and Employment Law Trial Advocacy Competition to introduce law students to the challenges and rewards of employment and labor litigation. Phi Alpha Delta Sponsors Eyeglasses Donation Drive
Phi Alpha Delta will be organizing an eyeglasses donation drive November 1-16. All interested students, faculty, and staff who have old, unwanted prescription eyeglasses and prescription as well as non-prescription sunglasses are encouraged to drop them off on campus in specially marked bins around campus.
The donated eyeglasses will then be given to the Lion's Club Recycle for Sight Program. Collected glasses are shipped to Lions' regional eyeglass recycling centers where they are cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution around the world by the Lions and other health organizations.

This year's SBA Executive Board wanted the Southwestern Community to know a little more about them, so they were given the opportunity to provide some background information, as well as a choice of three "entertaining" questions. Despite the fact that the attorney Alan Shore practices law without morals and ethics, his in-court presence is both persuasive and powerful. He commands the attention of the jury through his rhetoric, which is a characteristic I hope to one day achieve.

"Veronica Mars" - once again ... not a law-themed television show ... but it is really good television ... and she is a private investigator, her father is the ex-sheriff, and she has a lawyer friend who makes jokes about failing criminal law.

EVENTS
15th Annual Public Interest Law Week is Just Around the Corner
After a very productive start to the school year with the coordinations of Katrina relief efforts, the Public Interest Law Committee is excited to announce the events for the 15th Annual Public Interest Law Week, November 3 - 10, designed to raise awareness of public interest law opportunities and raise funds for public interest summer grants.
This year's keynote speaker has been called one of the "most experienced, civic-minded and thoughtful people on the subject of Los Angeles" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of California's top 10 most influential lawyers" by California Law Business. Constance Rice, who will speak to the Southwestern community on Tuesday, November 8 at 12:30 p.m. in BW390, is co-founder and co-director of the Advancement Project, a public policy and legal action group that supports organizations working to end community problems and address racial, class and other barriers to opportunity.
Other events include the Public Interest Employer Fair (November 3, 12:15 p.m., Promenade), Past Participants/Practitioners Panels (Monday, November 7, 12:30 p.m.), Bake Sale, Raffle, Basketball Tournament, Documentary Presentation, and the always-popular Silent and Live Auctions. Student volunteers are needed for a variety of events, so if you are interested in joining the efforts, email Linda Bradlyn at the email address below.
The Public Interest Live Auction will be held Wednesday, November 9 at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Commons. As an added twist this year, the Silent Auction will end on Thursday, November 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in the Promenade with live music, for those who would like to make their final bids in order to secure items of interest. All contributions (typically gift certificates, tickets to sports events, passes to recreational facilities services such as tennis lessons or bar preparation courses) are tax deductible.

Career Services' Fall Offerings
In addition to the Public Interest Law Week Employer Fair, a networking event where you can learn about gaining experience in almost any area of the law by working and/or volunteering for a public interest organization (Thursday, November 3, 12:15 p.m., Promenade), Career Services has a number of programs planned this Fall. They include:
- Career Services for the First-Year Student
Participate in a discussion about the Career Services Office events for the year, as well as the resources Career Services offers to students. This program for first-year students will be held on Tuesday, October 18 at 12:30 and 5 p.m. in W311. - Career Services Open House
Come visit the Career Services Office, meet the team, and see what is available to you. A Career Services Open House will take place on Tuesday, November 1 from 10 am to 6 pm. Drop by, check out the office, pick up some refreshments and learn what Career Services can do for you. - Practice Specialities Day
Find out what it is like to work in Orange County or in a variety of different practice areas. Practice Specialities Day, co-sponsored by Southwestern and hosted by Chapman Law School in Orange, California, will be held on Saturday, November 5. Here is your chance to talk to practicing lawyers about what they like and dislike about their area of the law. There will also be a networking lunch. Registration will take place the morning of the event.

"Entertainment Without Borders" to Discuss Business on a Global Scale
As a truly global business, the entertainment industry knows no borders. Whether one's clients are in Los Angeles, London or Beijing, today's increasingly complex and dynamic entertainment environment brings new issues about which every entertainment lawyer must be aware. Three of the most critically important aspects of doing business on a global scale will be discussed in "Entertainment Without Borders," a conference co-sponsored by Southwestern's Biederman Institute and the Beverly Hills Bar Association.
The program will be held Tuesday, November 1, from 2:30 to 7 p.m., on the Southwestern campus. It will focus specifically on new challenges that have arisen in the cross border distribution of films and the repatriation of royalties from abroad, as well as strategies for resolving international disputes. Southwestern welcomes its newest staff member to campus:
Ayumi Nakamoto, Student Services Assistant, Registrar's Office - Prior to joining Southwestern, Ayumi was the Assistant Director of Course Services for the Princeton Review. Her responsibilities included organizing and managing all standardized test courses for high school students, instructors' support and student services. Ayumi earned her bachelor's degree in English from UCLA. While a student, she served on the board of directors for the Bruin Belles Service Association for three years and assisted in raising funds for the Aviva Center, a shelter for abused adolescent women.

Fit for Law, Fit for Life - Exercising Tips
Next time you visit Southwestern's Fitness Center, keep the following in mind:
Stretch for success
Before stretching, take a few minutes to warm up as stretching cold muscles can cause injury. Begin with a simple, low-intensity warm-up, such as easy walking while swinging the arms in a wide circle. Spend at least 5 to 10 minutes warming up prior to stretching.
When performing any stretch:
- Start each stretch slowly, exhaling as you gently stretch the muscle.
- Try to hold each stretch for at least 10 to 30 seconds.
Avoid these stretching mistakes:
- Don't bounce a stretch. Holding a stretch is more effective and there is less risk of injury.
- Don't stretch a muscle that is not warmed up.
- Don't strain or push a muscle too far. If a stretch hurts, ease up.
- Don't hold your breath.
