Faculty Transitions

A number of faculty have been appointed to new positions at Southwestern for the 2013-14 academic year:

Writing Center

Christine ChorbaProfessor Christine Chorba will return to the full-time LAWS faculty as Professor of Legal Analysis, Writing and Skills after having served as Director of the Writing Center for five years. She originally joined the Southwestern legal writing faculty in 2004 and moved to the Writing Center four years later. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011.

Alexandra D'ItaliaProfessor Alexandra D'Italia has been appointed as Director of the Writing Center and Associate Professor of Law. She was most recently Assistant Director of the Writing Center and Adjunct Professor of Law. She originally joined Southwestern's LAWS faculty in 2006 and later became an adjunct faculty member teaching the Advanced Legal Writing elective. She was recognized in 2012 and 2013 with the Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award.

Academic Support and Bar-Related Programs

Professor John Heilman and Professor Natalie Rodriguez have been appointed as Co-directors of Southwestern's Academic Support and Bar-Related Programs and will oversee the design and implementation of innovative academic support programs, courses and individual and small group counseling sessions, and bar exam preparation classes, workshops and events.

John HeilmanProfessor John Heilman came to Southwestern in 2012 after almost two decades on the Whittier Law School faculty, where among other courses, he developed and implemented exam writing and bar examination preparation programs. This past year, he taught Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence and courses in the Academic Support Program and was honored with Southwestern's Excellence in Teaching Award.

Natalie RodriguezProfessor Natalie Rodriguez, who served this past year as the Academic Support and Bar-Related Programs Fellow and Adjunct Associate Professor of Law, graduated at the top of her class at Southwestern, where she was a Dean's Fellow and Teaching Assistant and served in the Children's Rights Clinic and several judicial externships.

Elizabeth Mackey-SallProfessor Elizabeth Mackey-Sall will work closely with Professors Heilman and Rodriguez as the Academic Support and Bar-Related Programs Fellow and Adjunct Associate Professor of Law. A 2013 graduate of Southwestern, she served in the clinic and in externships with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the San Bernardino County Superior Court and the L.A. City Attorney's Office. She was a Teaching Assistant for Associate Dean Arthur McEvoy and helped develop a pilot program providing specialized writing practice and feedback for students.

Professor Andrea Ramos

Andrea RamosProfessor Andrea Ramos, the founding Director of Southwestern's Immigration Law Clinic, has been promoted to Clinical Professor of Law. Prior to joining the law school in 2008, she was Director of the Children's Rights Project at Public Counsel, supervising more than 700 volunteers assisting over 6,000 children and youth annually. She also served as a co-teacher of USC's Children and the Law course as a member of their adjunct faculty.

Professor Dov Waisman

Dov WaismanProfessor Dov Waisman, who has served on Southwestern's LAWS faculty since 2007, has been appointed as Associate Professor of Law and will teach Community Property in both the traditional and SCALE programs, as well as Contracts. Prior to joining Southwestern, Professor Waisman was a litigation associate representing corporate clients for the firm of Sidley Austin, and practiced family law with the firm of Harris-Ginsberg.
