Jonathan Handel, Entertainment Attorney and Author of "Hollywood on Strike" in Conversation at Southwestern
Jonathan Handel, Entertainment Attorney, journalist and author of Hollywood on Strike, will be the next guest of the 2010-2011 "A Conversation With..." series presented by Southwestern's Biederman Institute, co-sponsored by the Beverly Hills Bar Association and LACBA's Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property Section (ELIPS). The conversation, "The Past, Present and Future of Hollywood Unions," will be led by Professor Steven Krone, Director of the Biederman Institute. The program and subsequent reception will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. on the Southwestern campus.
A seasoned attorney and journalist with a broad range of experience in the entertainment and technology industries, Mr. Handel is Of Counsel at TroyGould where he practices in the areas of digital media, entertainment, technology and intellectual property transactions. He also covers entertainment labor and other topics as a contributing editor at The Hollywood Reporter and blogs at jhandel.com, the Huffington Post and Forbes.com. His work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Variety, the Los Angeles Business Journal and the Daily Journal.
Mr. Handel's new book, Hollywood on Strike: An Industry at War in the Internet Age (Hollywood Analytics, 2011), explores the contracts, economics and politics of Hollywood labor relations. A former associate counsel at the Writers Guild, Mr. Handel is a uniquely qualified expert in such matters. Previously, he also worked at a boutique law firm representing movie stars, writers and directors. Additionally, he has clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Early in his career, Mr. Handel practiced appellate and commercial litigation.
In 2008, the Daily Journal selected Mr. Handel as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. Law & Politics magazine designated him as a Southern California Super Lawyer in 2007 and 2006. Mr. Handel has been an adjunct professor at UCLA School of Law and for several years taught a film appreciation and screening class for UCLA Extension. Additionally, he is a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Mr. Handel earned his A.B. degree in Applied Math/Computer Science from Harvard College (magna cum laude) and his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School (cum laude). Prior to law school, he worked in the computer industry in research, programming and market support functions.
