Trustee Jana Greer to Receive Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree
During Southwestern's 26th Annual Awards Recognition Reception, the Southwestern Board of Trustees will confer an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Jana Waring Greer, a member of the board for more than 25 years.
Ms. Greer has played a key role in the development of Southwestern as a dedicated trustee and generous benefactor. The following year, she was elected to the Southwestern Board of Trustees, and soon thereafter was appointed Chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee and member of the Executive Committee. She also served on the Southwestern-Drucker Advisory Board. Her vision and business acumen have been pivotal in the enhancement of Southwestern's academic programs and faculty, development of strategic partnerships, expansion of the campus, and leadership of related fund raising campaigns.
Ms. Greer is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Individual and Group Retirement division of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), where she has direct responsibility for AIG's domestic retirement savings businesses with assets under management of more than $200 billion. During her tenure with the company, she took on increasingly responsible roles including Vice President, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, SunAmerica Inc., and President and Chief Executive Officer of SunAmerica Retirement Markets.
An active community leader with a keen interest in education, Ms. Greer chairs the University of Southern California Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Board of Councilors. Her other affiliations include serving as Chair of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, member of the Board of Governors of the Broad Foundation, and member of The Trusteeship, an affiliate of the International Women's Forum. Ms. Greer has received numerous honors for her philanthropic and business endeavors, including her recent induction into the Insured Retirement Institute's "Hall of Fame" and recognition by the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles as a "Woman of Distinction." She has also been given the "Founder's Visionary Award" by the Fulfillment Fund. Ms. Greer was named as "Outstanding Friend" by the Southwestern Alumni Association in 2000. A 1973 magna cum laude graduate of USC, she will be honored later in April 2014 with the prestigious Alumni Service Award by the USC Alumni Association.
