Michael Schmitt enjoys the challenge of making "complex legal concepts understandable, and even enjoyable, to aspiring lawyers." The author of articles and other media on the Uniform Commercial Code and corporate social responsibility, he has focused on commercial and corporate law.

His interest in these areas of law dates back to his own law school days when he served on the Yale Review of Law and Social Action board of editors, the Yale Legislative Services Project on Corporate Responsibility in the Urban Setting, and the Thomas Swan Barristers' Union.

Upon completion of his legal studies, Professor Schmitt joined the law faculty of Valparaiso University School of Law and later served as an associate professor at Western New England College School of Law. He was appointed to the Southwestern faculty in 1976. Since that time, he also served as a visiting professor of law at the Widener University School of Law and the University of Kansas School of Law. He became Professor Emeritus at Southwestern in 2008.
