July 2012 Student Housing Construction Update
July 2: Workers smooth out freshly poured concrete on P-1 parking deck, as wood forms and steel skeletons outline future walls and columns.
July 5: Wall forms rise higher and higher as workers, working west to east, begin spraying shotcrete. Note distinctive curved radius wall in upper right (southwest corner of building).
July 5: Temporary wood shoring provides support for installation of steel rebar and shotcrete.
July 5: View of the south west radius wall interior. Blocks of shotcrete waste will be removed and recycled.
July 5: As one worker applies shotcrete through a high-powered nozzle, others trowel and smooth the wall.
July 5: View east of the upper level parking deck construction. Concrete block (CMU) will be used by masons to build storage and mechanical rooms, non-structural parking walls, and elevator and stairwell shafts.
July 5: Looking west. Plastic sheeting protects exposed rebar from shotcrete spray. Workers continue to build forms for walls.
July 9: Exterior radius wall after forms removed. Later, the wall will be covered with stone.
July 9: Specialty certified workers apply shotcrete, pumped from cement truck, in background.
July 9: P-1 wall forming part of bike storage room nears completion.
July 9: Workers prepare to build temporary shoring for podium deck.
July 9: Matt Construction Assistant Project Manager Bowdy Broeker talks with concrete subcontractor supervisor in front of rebar wall installation.
July 9: Storage room on P-1 level.
July 11: Architect Tony Stark stands in front of frame for main stairway from 7th Street.
July 11: Removed forms show wall along Shatto Place. Parking garage emergency exit appears at top. Wall will be covered in dark, variegated granite.
July 11: CFO Paul Kalush stands on ramp to P-2 level, as workers start to form supports for podium deck.
July 11: Columns rise on P-1 deck to support podium.
July 11: Interior view of completed radius wall at P-1 level.
July 11: These columns were hand-formed by shotcrete applicators. Conduit extending from base of wall will provide outlets for charging electrical vehicles, which will have priority parking here.
July 11: P-1 elevator shaft takes form, as do storage and electrical rooms in background.
July 11: Shoring for podium deck starts at parking ramp as piles of support rods and lumber are readied. Two levels of shoring will be required here because of a larger ceiling height.
July 11: Workers set up temporary steel shoring, to support temporary lumber frames, over which will be laid temporary plywood floors. Steel rebar will then be installed, utility and low voltage conduit laid and concrete poured to a 10” thickness for the podium deck.
July 16: Forms for podium deck progress, creating geometric patterns on parking garage floor.
July 16: Temporary shoring has now been removed from 7th Street frontage and soldier piles cut to below grade, as P-I parking walls take shape. Planters will be installed in front of these walls.
July 16: Storage and mechanical rooms rise in P-1 garage. This will be the bike storage room.
July 16: Excavator digs trench around curved radius wall for planter, as workers control dust with water.
July 16: As many as 50 workers a day continue to frame the podium deck and complete the storage and mechanical rooms, remove perimeter shoring and excavate for planters.
July 16: Dean Austen Parrish (center) visits the site with (from left to right) architect Tony Stark, CFO Paul Kalush, developer consultant Ted Snyder and Assistant Dean for Property Development Jim Camp.
July 16: Matt Construction Project Manager Charlie Mallers (left) talks with Ted Snyder and Dean Parrish. In background, a portion of the P-1 parking garage is darkened by the now completed temporary shoring.
July 25: Project overview of first floor construction.
July 25: Close-up view of podium decking looking west.
July 25: Street level view of 7th Street grand entry into lobby.
July 25: View of first floor support and P-1 parking ventilation openings.
July 2012 Student Housing Construction Update
With the completion of the upper parking deck, the building rises above ground level, growing taller every day. By the end of the month, the podium deck tops off the parking structure and serves as the ground level for the residential building and commons.
