Vancouver Externships

Externship Program: May 27 - June 27, 2012

A limited number of part-time, 128-hour externships are available to qualified applicants. Students who participate in the Externship Program will have the opportunity to work with the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy.

Additional placements may be available with other legal organizations in Vancouver. The Externship Program provides students with a unique opportunity to develop legal and professional skills in the area of comparative and international law.

Externship Requirements

Student participants will receive two units of credit for 128 hours of field placement. Participants in the Externship Program must also enroll in one course (but no more than one), for a total of four units. An informal externship meeting, held once a week, will also be required. Students interested in the Externship Program should contact either Professor Gowri Ramachandran or Professor Caleb Mason, Co-Directors of the Vancouver Program.

Grading/Credit

The two-unit externship is graded as "Credit/No Credit." The grade of "Credit" is a passing grade. Only a notation of "Credit" or "No Credit" will be recorded on the student transcript. Southwestern cannot indicate a letter grade for the externship, nor can Southwestern certify that work which receives a "Credit" is equivalent to a particular letter grade. Students should contact their home school to ascertain whether transfer units will be awarded for courses designated as "Credit" before applying to the Externship Program. Students must fulfill all externship requirements to receive a "Credit" grade.

Application

Students wishing to participate in the Externship Program must complete the program application including: (1) a completed application form; (2) a law school transcript; (3) a letter of good standing from student's law school; and (4) a nonrefundable $500 registration fee made payable to Southwestern. In addition, they must submit a current resume and one letter of reference. A Program Director may interview each student applicant, in person or by telephone, prior to acceptance. Placements will be assigned in mid-April. Only one to four students will be accepted into the Externship Program. Any student who applies and is not accepted into the Externship Program may register for two or three of the offered courses in the Summer Law Program. All externship placements are at the discretion of the Vancouver Summer Law Program Directors, in consultation with the supervisors at individual placements. Southwestern reserves the right to change or cancel the Externship Program portion of the Summer Law Program at any time prior to May 1.
