Three-year SCALE JD/MBA Program

Three-year SCALE JD/MBA Program with The Drucker School of ManagementSouthwestern and The Drucker and Graduate School of Management have expanded their cooperative concurrent-degree program offerings to include an exciting three-year JD/MBA option. The new program is one of only a few at law schools nationwide and the first on the West Coast to offer students the opportunity to earn both degrees in just three years. Students in the SCALE JD/MBA Program acquire both substantive training in law and management as well as hands-on experience in real-world settings.

This new three-year option takes advantage of Southwestern's accelerated SCALE® Program, the nation's first two-year J.D. program, and the law school's continuing partnership with The Drucker School, part of the Claremont Graduate University, one of the top management graduate schools in the country. The law school and business school jointly launched a more traditional four-year JD/MBA program in Fall 2009.

SCALE

A trailblazer since 1974, the two-year SCALE program integrates substantive knowledge and professional skills instruction, a model that is just now being incorporated into curricular reforms at many other law schools in response to the call for more practical skills training in legal education. SCALE provides both structure and flexibility in a two-year JD immersion program that enables students to master analytical reasoning and legal writing skills while remaining sensitive to ethical obligations and client needs. SCALE students begin their studies in June and attend class year-round. They graduate with their traditional counterparts in May. Click here for more information on the program.

Curriculum

Students in the SCALE JD/MBA program will spend their first year at Southwestern in Los Angeles, their second year at The Drucker School in Claremont and their third taking courses from both schools. The course requirements of the two degrees are satisfied by units that are cross applied and by specially-designed externships and joint courses that incorporate classroom instruction in law and management with hands-on skills training. During the summers of both the first and second years of the program, students have significant flexibility in tailoring their curriculum to their individual interests. They may choose to acquire practical experience by working for compensation and taking evening or weekend elective courses; pursue a full- or part-time externship; or study abroad in an ABA-approved Summer Law Program, including one of Southwestern's programs in Buenos Aires, Guanajuato, London or Vancouver, or in Drucker's summer business program at Oxford.

Degree Requirements

Under the JD/MBA program, up to 16 units may be cross-applied between Southwestern and Drucker. Additionally, new courses to be team-taught by Southwestern and Drucker faculty, along with special joint externships, offer students in this three-year program an integrated law and business curriculum as well as hands-on training. These joint offerings count toward the total units required for both the JD and MBA degrees (87 units required for the JD and 60 units required for the MBA); students otherwise complete the separate requirements for each degree.
