Description
This course will cover important substantive criminal law-related topics that are typically not covered, or not covered in-depth, in the three-unit, first year Criminal Law course. The course will cover four principal subject areas: criminalization, crimes and defenses, punishment and sentencing and issues relating to race, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in the criminal law. Students will engage in group exercises designed to develop in-depth understanding of these topics. Exercises could include, for example, drafting statutes, making oral arguments, counseling clients, negotiating pleas, and writing sentencing memoranda.
