Hawaii Intersession - DeckTravel and Living Accommodations

Students will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from San Pedro, California. Students will be housed in double-occupancy, exterior staterooms on the Golden Princess cruise ship. Students who would like to room together should indicate that fact on the Application. Students who would like to room with a non-student (e.g., spouse) should contact the Program Office. Housing includes most on-board meals and entertainment.

Admission and Course Credit

Southwestern is approved by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. Because this is a domestic program, no separate ABA approval is required.

Applicants with sufficient English proficiency from law schools outside the United States and Canada will also be considered for admission. Prior to the start of the program, students must have completed their first year of law study and must submit a transcript and a letter of good standing from their law school.

If applications are received from more students than the program can accommodate, the academic performance of applicants (as shown by their transcripts) may be considered in deciding which applicants will be accepted.

Students must register for three one-unit courses, for a total of three semester units of credit. The grade in the negotiation courses will be determined by various in-class exercises and assignments. The grade in the entertainment law courses will be determined by a written final, take-home exam, which will be due two (2) weeks after the end of the Program.

Grades will conform to Southwestern's grading policies. Southwestern utilizes an alpha grading system in which the actual grade earned is represented by an alphabetical letter. Grades are assigned from A+ to F. Students are advised to consult their home school policies concerning receiving credit for course work.

Additional information can be found in Southwestern's Student Handbook, which will be sent to all accepted applicants and is also available upon written request.

Southwestern will send a transcript to the student's home institution following completion of the program and final payment of all tuition and fees. Students should consult with their home institutions regarding the transfer of credit and financial aid. Acceptance of transfer credit is subject to determination by the student's home school. Students should be aware that participation in a winter intersession program is unlikely to accelerate their graduation date; students interested in acceleration should consult their home school.

Tuition and Refund Policy

Students who withdraw from the program or request a class change must notify the Program Office in writing as early as possible. Students who withdraw before the first day of the program may receive a 100% credit of charged tuition, with the exception of the $250 non-refundable registration deposit. Thereafter, refund for tuition is pro-rated on a daily basis. After 60% of the program is completed, there is no tuition refund. Fees paid for stateroom space will not be refunded after September 14, 2012.

Cancellation Policy

Southwestern reserves the right to change or cancel the Program at any time prior to October 1, 2012. Cancellation of the program or any course at a later date will occur only if necessary for reasons beyond Southwestern's control. If the Program is cancelled, students will receive a full refund. In addition, the program director will use his or her best efforts to make arrangements for each student enrolled to attend a similar program, if the student so desires.

Liability and Insurance

Southwestern will not be responsible for personal injuries to students, medical conditions, or for loss or damage to personal property in transit to San Pedro, California, on the cruise ship or during the stopovers in Hawaii and Ensenada. Southwestern requires students to obtain health insurance that covers or reimburses for health care abroad, and requires the plan to cover medical evacuation and repatriation.
