Alternative Sentencing & Correctional Education (January Intersession)

Description

This course is for any student with an interest in the criminal justice system, including in the role of prosecutor, defense attorney, judicial officer, legislator, or administrator. The course will feature the innovative work of the L.A. County Sheriff Department's Education-Based Incarceration (EBI), including a visit to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department (the largest sheriff's department in the world, serving 10 million residents) to more closely observe and understand Education-Based Incarceration, including its benefits and challenges. Students will be encouraged to explore alternatives to traditional incarceration, including development of correctional education courses for the Sheriff's Department EBI program or even a program for continual student participation in the Sheriff's Department EBI program (similar to VITA or Southwestern's Street Law Clinic).
