Description

This course covers the components of the health care system and current issues in health law. Patient rights encompassing questions of medical record confidentiality, electronic health information, informed consent to treatment, and safeguards for research subjects are explored. Regulation of health professionals, facilities, academic institutions, managed care organizations and pharmaceutical companies; reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance; credentialing and peer review; and legal restrictions on ownership and other provider compensation arrangements are also discussed. In addition, other areas of law such as antitrust and tax-exempt status are considered in the context of the health care system. Emphasis will be on health care policy and regulatory research skills.
